Manly coach Geoff Toovey has revealed Brett Stewart's back injury is recovering slower than expected and the star fullback is still a few weeks away from a return to the field.

Stewart chipped a bone in his back in the Round 8 clash with St George Illawarra and was expected to miss a month of football.

The 28-year-old had pencilled in this weekend's clash with the Warriors in New Zealand to make his comeback but Toovey confirmed on Monday that would not be the case.

"I think (aiming his comeback for this weekend) was more his hopes than anything else," the Sea Eagles boss told reporters at the club's Narrabeen training base.

"The players want to get back as soon as possible but also there's a duty of care from our point of view.

"There's no use being back for one week and being out again for another month.

"We've got to make sure he's right and ready to play."

Stewart, who was set to be the NSW fullback for Origin one until the injury, could push for selection for game two with a return for the following week's clash with Canterbury at Brookvale Oval.

But even that scenario seems unlikely, with a frustrated Toovey conceding there is nothing the club can do but wait until the problem heals properly.

"He's progressing really well (but) he's still a few weeks away I think," Toovey said.

"There's nothing you can do about it, it's one of those broken bone things.

"You can't really speed anything up...hopefully he'll be back sooner rather than later."

While happy with the performance of youngster Peta Hiku in Stewart's absence, Toovey admitted his side's attack has suffered without the Test and Origin star.

"Peta's doing a good job but you miss that strike from (the back)," Toovey said.

"He's (Stewart) a great tryscorer. In those close games you need those blokes that can pull something out of nowhere.

"We need to do what we can to adjust that and improve in that area. That's what we'll have to do against the Warriors."

Asked about facing the inconsistent Warriors, Toovey said: "I thought the last few games they probably should have won but have let it slip.

"They are still a quality side with quality players and have plenty of strike and good size and speed.

"They just need to put it together and they'll have a win soon. Hopefully it's not against us."

The NRL career of Manly recruit Zane Tetevano is almost certainly over after he admitted in court to bashing his former girlfriend on four occasions.
Tetevano has pleaded guilty to eight charges in Newcastle Local Court on Friday, including two counts of common assault and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
On each occasion Tetevano was affected by alcohol and attacked his then girlfriend by variously pushing her to the ground, kicking her, and on one occasion picking her up by her shirt and holding her against a wall, and throwing her around the bedroom at the Merewether unit they once shared.

Amazing ... another "star" banned for life ... oh ... wait a moment ... ;)

Not saying its not deserved, but I'd like to see equal punishment apply.

Yes a bit of consistency would be nice.

I certainly hope Tetevano never pulls on a Manly jersey.

The Manly front-rower Brenton Lawrence is set to undergo surgery on his back later this week, meaning a long stint on the sidelines, the club has announced.

Fellow prop Josh Starling is facing at least another month out, back-rower Feleti Mateo is likely to be sidelined for one game, while centres Steve Matai and Jamie Lyon face fitness tests later in the week.

Onto the footy ground ran the fearless 26. It was a tough game, there were injuries to the left of us, injuries to the right of us.
The Ref blew his whistle and the fans cheered on. What a sight to behold when your young and bold to see the stretcher make an appearance and know its not for you.

Hard to believe that any club can field a fully fit side by round 5 the way players are dropping this season.

Manly's Martin Taupau will miss three NRL matches after submitting an early guilty plea for his dangerous throw on Brisbane's Matt Gillett.

He seems to have a problem. Although I'm not sure how a tripping offence gets nothing. And ... Hunt's tackle on M'Bye sees him on the field this week.

Thought the dogs had this easily. Barrett seems to be turning into a fair sort of coach the way the Seagles fought back to take it golden point.
Injuries aside its always nice to see them lose:bag:
