Drew Hutchison will be sidelined for the majority of the season after suffering a serious knee injury during training at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Thursday.

    And ... so it starts ... :)

The local Albion Park-Oak Flats junior has since undergone scans which have unfortunately confirmed a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his left knee which will require surgery.

“Unfortunately, Drew has ruptured his ACL during training on Thursday that will see him require surgery,” said Dragons Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth.

“There are a lot of upset faces amongst the playing group and football staff as a result and we are all shattered for him.

“Drew had undertaken a simple ball-work drill and there was a collision amongst some of the players involved and unfortunately his foot got caught in the ground.

“With the forces that were applied to his body at the time, Drew’s knee got put into a vulnerable position which resulted in the ACL rupture.

“He has since under gone scans which have confirmed the injury and we have already spoken to a number of surgeons.

“We are presently gathering information over what is the best course of action for Drew in the short term being mindful that he is a young athlete and therefore making sure the best decision is also made about his long term career and health.

“Drew will undergo surgery prior to the holiday period and will be provided all the help and support needed as he overcomes this setback.”

Kangaroos star Josh Dugan is ready to "rip and tear" into the Dragons' NRL pre-season training despite suffering a knee injury in the Four Nations final.

Dragons head of athletic performance Nathan Pickworth said Dugan had suffered a grade one ligament injury late in his two-try display in Australia's 34-8 win over New Zealand.

But Pickworth said Dugan would hit the ground running when the NRL club returned from their Christmas-New Year break.

"His knee is looking pretty good," he told Dragons TV.

Forward Jack de Belin is confident about being available for the start of the NRL season, despite suffering a fractured wrist while training.

Beginning the to think the Dragons are either over training or doing the wrong kind of training with the injuries that are occurring before they even get on the field for a game.

Refs were at fault in this one. They should (and MUST) call "held" earlier. You could see what was going to happen. Yet he was dragged, twisted, tripped, twisted again, and grappled to the ground - over about 10 metres - by about 4 guys. Say 400-500 kilos on top of one man (105 kilos ?).

The Nrl will think about it for a while like they did with the "shoulder" charge issue and might decide that once forward momentum is halted the tackle is effected but that will also negate chances for offloads opportunities.

St George Illawarra Dragons fullback Matt Dufty made a successful return from a knee injury in Illawarra's Intrust Super Premiership loss to the Penrith Panthers last Saturday afternoon. Dufty suffered the injury during February's Auckland Nines tournament but was able to make it back in time for Round 1.

The Penshurst RSL junior also assessed how first-time five-eighth Patrick Herbert handled the occasion for Illawarra.
