A playoff spot will be much closer for the Steelers if they beat NRL joint venture partner St George in Saturday’s SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup at UOW Jubilee Oval. The Steelers are coming off big wins over Central Coast in both junior competitions in round seven last Saturday but need to keep winning to make the finals. Illawarra are ninth and the Dragons 13th in SG Ball, while the Steelers are seventh and St George second last in the under 16 Harold Matthews Cup. The Steelers’ Matts Cup team are coming off a 48-6, nine try to one belting of the fourth-placed Central Coast in round 7. Second rower Aaron Schoupp and centre Max Fegai bagged a double with Schoupp finishing with a 20 point haul after adding six conversions. The Dragons are coming off an 18-14 loss to North Sydney and cannot make the playoffs, but will be tough at home against their neighbours. In the SG Ball U18 comp, the Steelers beat Central Coast 36-6 in round seven, with centre Ethan Abou-Ghaida scoring a hat-trick of tries. St George are coming off a confidence-building 26-24 win over North Sydney. Kick off on Saturday in Harold Matthews Cup is 10am with the SG Ball at 11.15am. Both comps are a pathway to the NRL for futures stars of the game. Meanwhile, the Steelers’ Tarsha Gale Cup team had a forfeit against Wests last weekend and face the Panthers at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday. (1pm). The Steelers have played only four games – one or two less than some teams above them - and are only two points off top spot. Lilly-Rose Bennett has scored nine tries already this season.
